Q.Why should a customer purchase the SPS External
Connector license?
A.The SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) External
Connector license provides an unlimited number of
non-employees with access to a SharePoint Server
that is licensed with both the SPS Server license
and the External Connector license and is deployed
in an extranet or internet environment.
Q.How does this affect intranet licensing for
SharePoint Portal Server?
A.There are no changes to the existing client
access licenses (CAL) or server licensing model
for intranet portals running SharePoint Portal
Server.
Q.Do customers need to purchase server licenses
for SharePoint Portal Server in addition to the
External Connector license?
A.Yes. All servers running SharePoint Portal
Server must be licensed with the SPS Server
license, regardless of whether the software is
being used for an intranet, extranet and/or
internet site.
Q.Which servers do I need to purchase SPS External
Connector licenses for?
A.All servers that are deployed in an extranet or
internet scenario that uses any of the
functionality of SharePoint Portal Server and are
accessed by non-employees must be licensed with
both the SPS Server license and the SPS External
Connector license.
Q.Do customers need to purchase SharePoint CALs?
A.CALs must be purchased for each unique device
used by a company employee, vendor, contractor,
agency temp, subsidiary or affiliate to access an
intranet, extranet and/or internet site that uses
any service or functionality supplied by
SharePoint Portal Server. The External Connector
is only for non-employees. A non-employee is
anyone other than a person who performs work for
you or any of your affiliates as an employee,
independent contractor, agent, vendor or service
provider (including, without limitation, internet
service providers and service providers who host
your Web sites).
Q.Do employees need CALs to access a SharePoint
extranet or internet sites?
A.Yes. All unique devices used by employees to
access extranet or internet sites that use any of
the services or functionality of SharePoint Portal
Server must be licensed with a CAL.
Q.Who is not covered by the SPS External Connector
license and must have CALs?
A.CALs must be purchased for full and part-time
employees, agency temps, vendors, subsidiaries,
affiliates and service providers for each unique
device that accesses an intranet, extranet and/or
internet site that uses any service or
functionality supplied by SharePoint Portal
Server.
Q.What are the technical restrictions on the SPS
External Connector license?
A.There are no technical restrictions with the SPS
External Connector license. The External Connector
license enables customers to extend the rich
productivity and collaboration capabilities of SPS
to their business partners and clients. Any user
can be authenticated and use the SharePoint Portal
Server document management and subscription
capabilities, and receive customized content
through the portal.
Q.Do customers need to purchase an SPS External
Connector license for a server that is only being
used to crawl and index content?
A.Yes. All servers that are deployed in an
extranet and/or internet scenario and being
accessed by non-employees that use any service of
functionality of SharePoint Portal Server must be
licensed with both the SPS Server license and the
SPS External Connector license.
Q.Is there a limit to the number of non-employees
licensed under the SPS External Connector license?
A.No. The SPS External Connector license covers an
unlimited number of non-employees who access the
licensed servers.
Q.Do all non-employees have to be anonymous?
A.No. The SPS External Connector license enables
customers to extend the rich productivity and
collaboration capabilities of SPS to their
business partners and clients. Any non-employee
can be authenticated and use the SharePoint Portal
Server document management and subscription
capabilities, and receive customized content
through the portal.
Q.How does the SPS External Connector license
affect the Microsoft Solution for Internet
Business (MSIB)?
A.Customers who wish to use the SharePoint Portal
Server search capabilities as part of their
internet solution should purchase the SPS Server
license and the SPS External Connector license for
each server that is accessed by non-employees.
Q.What is the cost of the SPS External Connector
license?
A.The SPS External Connector pricing begins at
Open NL ERP $30,000 per server. The standard
server waterfall applies for volume discounts and
academic and government pricing.
Q.How do customers purchase the SPS External
Connector license?
A.The SPS External Connector license will be
publicly available through all standard Microsoft
Volume Licensing and Reseller channels beginning
July 1, 2002.
Q.Is Software Assurance available for the SPS
External Connector license?
A.Yes, Software Assurance is available for the SPS
External Connector license.
Q.Is the SPS External Connector license available
on a per processor basis?
A.No. The External Connector is priced per server
to be in line with other Microsoft Connector
licenses and to simplify licensing for our
customers.
Q.Is SharePoint Portal Server available on a per
processor basis?
A.No. SPS is licensed on a CAL and Server License
basis and is available as part of the core CAL.
Q.Is the SPS External Connector license available
for Academic Institutions?
A.Yes. The SPS External Connector license will
enable academic institutions to extend the
productivity and collaboration capabilities of
SharePoint Portal Server to their students.
Q.Is the SPS External Connector license available
for Government Institutions?
A.Yes. However, “affiliate” includes any
government agency, department, instrumentality,
division, unit or other office of your state or
local government that is supervised by you, is
part of your enterprise, or which supervises you
and is therefore not covered by the SPS External
Connector license.
Q.Is an “Anonymous Use” Internet License
available?
A.No. The External Connector license enables
non-employees to have unrestricted and unlimited
access to any SharePoint Portal Server extranet
