<<A digital dashboard builds on the Outlook Today concept of displaying a folder "home page" to combine personal, company and external data into a single display that might appear in a browser or in Outlook 2000 or 2002.

Microsoft has issued a patch for the Outlook View Control, which forms an essential part of most digital dashboards, to correct a significant security vulnerability. See MS01-038 - Outlook View Control Exposes Unsafe Functionality. If you are using the OVC in a web page or other non-Outlook application, omit the View parameter (e.g. <param name="View" value="By Category">) in the initial settings for the control. If you set the View this way, even to value="", it will cause the control to default to the user's Inbox rather than showing the folder you want. Digital dashboards are customizable Web sites that are designed to act as collaborative Web portals for your company's intranet, giving users the ability to manage, share, and filter important data in a more efficient manner than traditional HTML pages. They do this by providing a platform for reusable "Web Parts," which are small binary or HTML components that give a user concise information on some topic in a "snapshot" form. Dashboards allow users to choose those Web Parts most important to them and arrange them in a manner that suits their individual needs.

Companies can quickly build and deploy their own customized digital dashboard solutions using the Digital Dashboard Resource Kit (DDRK) 2.2. The kit is available for free download at the following Microsoft Web site:
