About deploying SharePoint Portal ServerYou can install Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server "v2.0" Beta 2 on one or more servers to provide a scalable, customized solution for your organization. You can choose to distribute the various components across one or more servers, creating a physical topology, called a server farm, that allows you to provide the best combination of performance and reliability for your deployment. A server farm is a group of computers, performing different functions, working together to provide diverse services through a unified experience. For example, it is recommended that you install the document management component on a separate server. You cam also choose to install index and search services on a separate server to enhance performance. The following image shows a typical server farm deployment with two servers.
In addition, you can customize your SharePoint Portal Server deployment to share services across multiple server farms. The following image shows a server farm deployment with multiple servers performing different functions.
