SMIGRATE

If you are up for the challenge there are some additional things you could
do to preserve the accounts on upgrade.  None of these are easy, but I am
posting for your consideration.

1. Use smigrate to backup the STS v1 sites.  Then, rename the Windows 2000
server to a different name and rename the Windows 2003 server to the Windows
2000 server's former name.  Then, manually create all of the local accounts
on the Windows 2003 server that were on the Windows 2000 server.  Then, use
smigrate to restore to the Windows 2003 server.  The account usernames
should then be preserved.

2. Use smigrate to backup the STS v1 sites.  Then, upgrade the Windows 2000
server to Windows 2003, uninstalling STS v1 as necessary.  Once the upgrade
was complete and WSS was installed, use smigrate to restore to WSS.  Note
that this option is the one I'd least recommend because it's the most
difficult to recover from if something goes wrong.

3. Set up your WSS server to use Active Directory account creation mode.
Then, make sure that each user in the User Info table in each web has a
unique, valid e-mail address.  This means that VISION\johndoe always has an
e-mail address like
johndoe@example.com in each web, and that no other user
is listed with that e-mail address.  Then use smigrate to backup the STS v1
sites and restore them to WSS.

4. Use smigrate to backup the STS v1 sites.  Then, rename the FWP file to a
CAB file and use Windows Explorer to extract it to an empty directory.  Find
the manifest file for each web (the root will be called manifest.xml, and
the manifest file for the immediate subwebs will be in the <Subwebs> tag).
For each manifest file, use a program such as WordPad to find all references
to VISION\USERNAME and change them to CENTRAL\USERNAME (assuming that the
CENTRAL\USERNAME domain account exists).  When you're done, save your
changes to the manifest files.  Then use a tool such as CABARC.EXE,
available for download from the CAB SDK at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dncabsdk/html/cabdl.asp,
to compress those extracted files into a new FWP file.  Then, use that FWP
file to restore to a WSS site.
