Using backups and restores are a great way of migrating portal from one server to another, or just using for disaster recovery. If you need to have more advanced backup procedures, such as a file level backup, you will need to investigate 3rd party products. The backup that comes with SPS 2 is much advanced over SPS 2001 in terms of allowing you to backup/restore specific portal sites rather than the whole server, but still leaves a little to be desired if you want to backup directly to tape or have a file level backup.

When working with a product that stores valuable company data, one of the most important maintenance tasks is backup. Anyone who has worked with SPS 2001 knows how poor the built-in backup solution was. SPS 2 includes a far superior backup solution. It isn’t quite as mature as Windows Backup, but it is a step in the right direction.

The new backup solution still does not support file-level backup and will not backup directly to tape, but it does allow you to selectively determine what you want to backup. It also provides a nice graphical user interface, shown below, rather than just a VBS script.
